Highway 321 gets a face lift as the Department of Transportation continues to work on the widening project due for completion by August 2008. There’s a misconception in the region that Highway 321 from Lenoir to Blowing Rock is closed. Tourists and travelers can be assured that the highway remains open and will experience only temporary closings. The road may only be closed for blasting on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 12 pm until 2 pm; however, it may not be necessary to close the road each week. Any other closings can’t delay traffic more than 15 minutes.
The DOT will inform motorist through permanent message signs along the highway and through the media. Travelers can visit the NCDOT Traveler Information Management web site at www.ncsmartlink.org, call the state's travel information line at 511, or call the resident engineer for updates at (828) 265-5088.
